Frequently Asked Questions
How often must a company in China file taxes?
Most companies in China file value-added tax (VAT) and related surtaxes monthly or quarterly, and corporate income tax (CIT) on a quarterly prepayment basis with an annual reconciliation. Individual income tax (IIT) on employee salaries is withheld and filed monthly. Missing a filing deadline, even a zero-declaration month, can trigger penalties and affect your company’s tax credit rating.
Do foreign-invested enterprises in China need an annual audit?
Yes. Foreign-invested enterprises are generally required to prepare annual financial statements audited by a licensed Chinese CPA firm. The audit report supports the annual CIT reconciliation, the joint annual inspection/reporting, and any profit repatriation or dividend distribution to overseas shareholders.
What is the difference between a small-scale and a general VAT taxpayer?
Small-scale taxpayers pay VAT at a low flat rate (commonly 3%, subject to policy adjustments) but cannot deduct input VAT. General taxpayers apply standard rates (such as 13%, 9%, or 6%) and can offset input VAT against output VAT. The right status depends on your turnover, industry, and customer base, and we advise on the optimal choice and any switch.
Can you help reduce our tax burden legally in China?
Yes. Through proactive tax planning we identify applicable incentives, such as reduced rates for small and low-profit enterprises, R&D super-deductions, and tax treaty benefits, and structure your operations to remain fully compliant while minimizing unnecessary tax. All planning is based on genuine business substance and PRC law.
What accounting records must a China company keep?
Companies must maintain statutory accounting books under the PRC Accounting Standards for Business Enterprises, retain fapiao (official invoices), contracts, bank statements, and supporting vouchers. Records are generally kept for at least 10 years and must be available for inspection by the tax authorities.
Do you handle VAT export refunds for trading and manufacturing companies?
Yes. We manage the full export VAT refund process, including export registration, document collection, refund calculation, and filing with the tax bureau, helping trading and manufacturing WFOEs recover eligible input VAT on exported goods.
