Frequently Asked Questions
If you lose your passport in China, immediately: (1) File a report at the nearest local police station to obtain an official loss report. (2) Contact your embassy or consulate to apply for an emergency travel document or replacement passport. (3) You will also need to visit the local Exit-Entry Administration Bureau to obtain a new visa or stay permit. Most embassies offer emergency after-hours services for lost passports.
Embassies and consulates can provide a list of English-speaking lawyers, contact your family, and ensure you are treated fairly under Chinese law. However, they cannot intervene in legal proceedings, provide legal advice, or get you out of jail. For legal representation in China, you will need a qualified Chinese attorney. Our firm provides legal services for foreign nationals in China.
While not mandatory, it is highly recommended that you register with your embassy or consulate upon arrival in China. This allows them to contact you in case of emergency (natural disasters, civil unrest, etc.) and provide consular assistance more efficiently. Most embassies offer online registration through their websites.
Contact the consulate that serves your geographic area. Each consulate has a defined consular district. For example, if you are in Guangzhou, contact the Guangzhou consulate rather than the Beijing embassy. If your country only has an embassy in Beijing, then the embassy serves the entire country. Check your country’s embassy website for the specific consular district map.
We make every effort to keep this directory current. However, embassies and consulates occasionally relocate or change contact details. Always verify the address and office hours on your embassy’s official website before visiting. The Chinese address provided is for navigation purposes (showing to taxi drivers, etc.). For the latest travel advisories and consular services, always consult your government’s official travel website.
